Neon

History

Discovered by Ramsay and Travers in 1898. Neon is a rare gaseous element present in the atmosphere to the extent of 1 part in 65,000 of air. It is obtained by liquefaction of air and separated from the other gases by fractional distillation.

Isotopes

Natural neon is a mixture of three isotopes. Six other unstable isotopes are known.

Compounds

Neon is a very inert element, however, it has been reported to form a compound with fluorine. It is still questionable if true compounds of neon exist, but evidence is mounting in favor of their existence. The ions, Ne+, (NeAr)+, (NeH)+, and (HeNe+) are known from optical and mass spectrometric studies. Neon also forms an unstable hydrate.

Properties

In a vacuum discharge tube, neon glows reddish orange.

It has over 40 times more refrigerating capacity per unit volume than liquid helium and more than three times that of liquid hydrogen. It is compact, inert, and is less expensive than helium when it meets refrigeration requirements.

Of all the rare gases, the discharge of neon is the most intense at ordinary voltages and currents.

Uses

Although neon advertising signs account for the bulk of its use, neon also functions in high-voltage indicators, lightning arrestors, wave meter tubes, and TV tubes. Neon and helium are used in making gas lasers. Liquid neon is now commercially available and is finding important application as an economical cryogenic refrigerant.

Neon Signs

Neon signs are great advertising for any business. They work well for retail settings such as game rooms, restaurants, diners, manufacturing units, pubs and lounges, fraternity lounges, and many other establishments.
The first set of neon signs was sold by a French company named Neon Claude to a Packard car dealership in Los Angeles in 1923, for a sum of $24,000.These “liquid fire” tubes glowed in the night as well as broad daylight and soon became popular. Since then, the neon technology has evolved tenfold, and the signs are more popular than ever today.
Not all signs are made of neon, since the neon gas only produces the color red. After the initial discovery of neon-emitting red light, other colors were discovered using mercury, carbon dioxide, and phosphor. Today, it is possible to produce more than 150 colors using these gases. Neon tubes are actually positive-charge-filled lamps.
Every neon sign made is handcrafted; despite the advancement in technology, the manufacturing of a sign just cannot be done by a machine. According to the design wanted, the artisan heats a glass tube into a pliable shape and then moulds the design and lettering as per the requirements. During this process of continuous heating and bending, air is let into the tube to maintain its hollow shape. After the designing is done, the tubes are vacuumed out using a suction pump, after which an inert gas is let into the tube—this gas determines the color of the neon sign. The gas-filled tube glows when current is passed through it ionizing the gas, thus causing it to glow.

Tips to Create Neon Signs:

Neon signs making is not an easy one, a typical procedure adopted:
Fully cleaned glass tube is located in a coating machine, which guide a phosphor liquid within the glass tube. This liquid is then drained back at the base of the glass tube. The coating is allowable to dry by placing it in ovens. The existence of neon impart orange or red light glow. Colour tints too completed by coating the glass tube with colour material.

• The glass tube is after that twisted using many procedures like gas burners for determining big curves and bends or little torch light burners for little bends. The font and designs are generating by the shaping and bending of these glass tubes. In case of larger signboards, many sections of neon tubes twisted into an exacting form are spliced and connected together.

• The completion of necessary shape has been achieved the ends are 'sealed' by fusing the ends of the glass tubes. The glass tube cleared of all the impurity by a sequence of actions. A vacuum formed in the glass tube, after that it is refill with hot dry air once more. High value of temperature is approved by introduce electrodes supply huge current and heating the innards to approximately 400 degree Celsius. This procedure is called bombarding.

• Before long after this procedure, the gas filled within the glass tube at a small force. The procedure be supposed to make sure, no contamination re-enters the glass tube. The glass tube is after that put through an 'aging' procedure, which makes the gas within stable and function for a lengthy moment.

• As a final point, the glass tubes are mounting according to the stress of the signboard subsequent to wiring and final time checks. Huge neon sign transformers specially designed for the board’s power these neon signs. The value of the neon signs and their operational should be monitor frequently, in order to obtain the excellent outcome.

FLASHING NEON LIGHT

PURPOSE: To show how a neon light reacts with a RC Circuit.

DESCRIPTION: A neon lamp is put in parallel with a capacitor in a RC circuit as in the picture above. This circuit is hooked up to a DC Power supply which is turned to about 80 VDC. When the capacitor is charged the neon lamp flashes, partially draining the capacitor and starting the process over again. The period of oscillation is RC dependent and can be varied by changing either the value of the resistance or capacitance. The amount of applied voltage will also effect the period of oscillation.

SUGGESTIONS:
EQUIPMENT: DC Power supply, capacitor board, resistor board, neon light and wires.

SETUP TIME: 50 min..

History of Neon in US

Neon LightsThe word neon originates from the Greek term "neos," meaning "the new gas." In 1902 the French inventor Georges Claude was the first to apply an electrical discharge to a sealed tube of neon gas to create a light. After displaying the first neon light at an auto convention in Paris in 1910, Georges Claude and his French company Claude Neon, introduced neon signs to the United States in 1923, by selling two to a Packard car dealership in Los Angeles. It attracted so much attention, that the benefits for outdoor advertising signage were undeniable. Visible even in daylight, people would stop and stare at the first neon signs dubbed "liquid fire." Neon lights took off in 1933 with the repeal of prohibition, which created a need for eye-catching advertising signs above bars. In the 30's and 40's, neon became synonymous with Art Deco and dominated the American urban landscape. By the 50's, neon lights had become inextricably linked with drive-ins, diners, and the glamour of Las Vegas. Nothing catches the eye like neon, and it has been the most effective medium for signs all over the world ever since.
